The Veil of Ignorance

A thought experiment in building a better world

Years ago, I learned about the Veil of Ignorance. It’s a thought experiment in which we are asked to design a society without knowing in advance our place in that society. What would that society look like? Would it look like the United States today, or more like a Scandinavian-style society? If your role in such a society isn’t guaranteed, you are forced to think of the pros and cons of what you thought might make for an ideal society. There’s much more nuance and complexity involved.

While no thought experiment is perfect, the Veil of Ignorance provides a jumping-off point, forcing us first and foremost to imagine what our life might be if we were poor, sick, marginalized, or in some other disadvantaged position. It’s a valuable tool for those of us whose aim is to reduce harm and suffering in this, or any, world.

Speaking of designing societies, nationstates.net allows you to build your own nation, acting as its leader. It’s a great opportunity to put the veil of ignorance to the test as you construct a society. I’ve played with it on and off for years, and have found it to be an enjoyable and thought-provoking activity. (Please note that I’m not shilling here. I get no benefit from discussing it, other than a reminder to start playing again!)
